@jetsetruri's development journal. Contrary to popular belief, as of September 2024, I'm still learning.

Oh goodness gracious, I had this blog for a while but not even a single post? Okay, where do I begin.

Introduction

Hi! I'm @jetsetruri. I love to blog about old computers and neat computer-related stuff. But I've been developing (heh) an interest in programming, toying with TIC-80 and C. More specifically, coding games on constrained hardware and seeing how far I can push them. See why devs did and didn't do the things they did in the past. Which is why I made this blog, because I want to separate them.

Motive

I always like to ask myself "how low can I go" when it comes to game development. What would a demo of A Hat in Time be like for the PSX, with 2-player split-screen? How about Cotton 2 on the NES, or better yet, Atari? And the best part: how am I going to optimize them? What compromises will I have to take?

Sure, this sounds unrealistic and damn near ambitious, but after seeing Portal 64, optimized Super Mario 64, and demos for the 8088 and Mega Drive, shit even Mario for the Intellivision and Sonic for the 2600, I feel like anything can happen with patience.

What now?

I currently want to exercise my knowledge of C and learn more about the NES, because it's the one machine I can find the most documentation on for C programming without dipping my feet into the freezing waters of 6502 assembly (I would've picked the Atari 5200 or Commodore 64 if I knew what documentation to use). Also because I like the idea of being able to run my game on any device I use, as opposed to TIC-80 which runs like molasses on my original 2DS.

I'll see you all at my next update!
